Fat Shark battery warning. Possibly not warning enough.

A great day flying at Dandenong police paddocks was ended abruptly when the Fat Shark Attitude i was using just went black after about 3 or 4 beeps of the low battery alarm. 

The conversation went something like this. 

ME: I wonder how much battery it has left?
Friend: I would say 10%
ME: Oh OK i should probably land then.
30 seconds later
ME: The screen just went black.
Friend: (breaks out laughing)

At this point i have cut the throttle and cant see where it is flying as it is into the sun so i apply a little up elevator for about 1-2 min until the Turning 9X says i have lost signal.

Tracked the plant to about 10m up this tree(check out the pic down below). I macgyvered together a long pole and poked the plane down nothing but a scratch.
